The settlement that would become Strongsville was founded about 1800 by John Stroud and his family as a trading post on the Scioto River near modern-day Mentor. In 1814, James Fenton purchased rights to what became Strongsville from John Stroud and began developing it into a village. On October 20, 1818, Strongsville was incorporated as a town in response to an appeal from residents of nearby Mentor for support in opposing annexation by Akron. The village had been operated as an agricultural community since its founding and lacked adequate transportation or infrastructure for rapid growth; incorporation made it possible for Strongsville to become one of the largest towns in Lucas County by 1830. During its early years, Strongsville enjoyed strong local trade and commerce with mentoring services beingwanae (a type of Indian corn) until railroads arrived in the late 19th century and transportation improved markedly. A cotton gin was built in 1881 by JN "Jock" Hargrave, which led to heavy industrial development over time including breweries, tool plants, electrical equipment manufacturing companies, paper mills and several major shoe factories before consolidation eventually led to declining production within these businesses and today only two buildings remaining from original industry: First American Corporation's old plant building on West Main Street now used as office space for the city government; Second American Corporation's former factory building on North Union Street now used as a restaurant/bar./conference center). It lies just east of Lake Erie on a long peninsula that forms part of what had been historically Dunkin' Donuts territory before that company merged with Burger King Worldwide in 1998. The name Strongsville comes from John Strong, an Englishman who came to America in 1814 as an engineer and surveyor. He named his new town after himself and his brother George Strong, also an engineer and surveyor. In 1825, John's son-in-law James Wadsworth purchased land east of town from the Indians in what is now North Zoning Township; Wadsworth developed this land into a township in 1827. In 1828, strongsville residents voted to incorporate as a village; they were granted this privilege by then-U.S. Represenative Edward Everett Mifflin (D-MA). Mifflin served as mayor from 1830 to 1840 and again from 1843 to 1850; he was also a justice of the peace for much of that time period. In 1830–31,Strongsville voters elected their first municipal officer—a select committee which consisted entirelyof men—to decide affairs within the village boundaries which lasted until 1903 when women began to be elected as well (see Appendix: Wisconsinites Who Came To Cleveland From Weaksville). Mifflin's successor as congressman was William Gaston Woolridge (R-OH) who represented Ohio's 2nd congressional district from 1850 to 1861; he then moved up through political life until he became governor of Ohio in 1863 following Abraham Lincoln's election as president – making him one of only two nonwhite federal politicians ever elected to that office (the other being Andrew Johnson). As governor, Woolridge made many important contributions including creating public education laws both inside and outside Ohio while also sponsoring legislation establishing statewide credit unions/ savings banks/the National Agricultural Bank etc.; all these actions helped solidify Cleveland’s status as one of America’s leading economic powers during Reconstruction era(). In 1870–71strongsville voters passed a resolution asking President Grant if any portion or all of Indiana should become part OF United States because "we are very much aggrieved about our lost Territory southward." Although Grant refused outright this annexation request - instead issuing Executive Order 9886 stateing "No Public Money shall be spent upon such Annexation" - US citizens living north Of Indianapolis could see their taxes increase seventeenfold between 1870 &1891 due largely to Indian Wars hostilities spilling over into adjacentIndiana counties neighboring Cincinnati & Dayton!
