Strongsville is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 20,864 as of the 2010 census. The town is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1814 by General Anthony Wayne and named for John Strong, an Englishman who had helped to purchase land from the French in Canada. In 1830, Strongsville became a county seat and remained so until its incorporation into Dayton in 1871. A post office called Strongsville was established in 1814, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1870. The first settler in Strongsville was John Strong, who arrived with his family from England about 1814. He built a log cabin on what is now Second Street near where Wabash Avenue now lies. John's son-in-law Ephraim Lehman also settled hereabouts early in 1800; he built a large frame house on Third Street east of Main Street which still stands today (now home to the Weakley Museum). Other early settlers included George Washington Kimball (1815 – 1902), Isaac Myers (1816 – 1888), Joshua Hathaway (1817 – 1865), Elijah McCoy (1819 – 1886), Solomon Warfield Smith (1820 – 1889) and Nathaniel Ransom (died young). In 1830, when Strongsville became a county seat, it was moved from its original location at what is now Northwest corner of Market and Second Streets to what is now East side of First Street between McMillan Avenue and Park Avenue Extension north of Fifth Avenue N/S.. This site had been used as an Indian trading post by local Indians dating back to at least 1795 when Colonel Arthur Stroud erected a stockade there with assistance from French traders under Captain Jacques Marquette.. In 1824 Drayson & Eldredge built extensive plank buildings west side of First street opposite current day Depot Square which served as jail until 1907 when it burned down. After that time local government services were provided by justices courts elected by citizens instead of being appointed by the county commissioners like they are today! Later that year Anthony Wayne arrived with his forces during the American Civil War fought southward along the river frontage between Fort Mifflin on one bank and Richmond Heights on another bank- this area then become known as strongstown because many Union soldiers died here while trying to cross overland across said fortifications during that conflict! On July 5th 1840 Captained George Stephenson’s steamboat “ Niagara” based outof Buffalo NY ran aground off shore just downstream from present day downtown STRONGVILLE losing all her crew including captain & 4 women passengers however no lives were lost aboard ship none were ever found but boat remains abandoned some believe she may have sunk due to ice pack etc… SS Niagara left Buffalo Ont Mar 30 1840 bound for Liverpool UK laden with coal cepting 2 women children lifeboats went out both times!! Some think she got stuck fast bottom ended up right next to modern day STRONGVILLE pier today! Both boats remain abandoned at wreck site despite numerous efforts over years by locals divers nothing has been found yet!!!!!!
