A gristmill built around 1840 by Nicholas Eaton became one of Ohio's largest producers of flour until it went out of business around 1870. In 1884, Mechanic & Machine Company began producing munitions from armaments produced at its factory along Third Street near downtown Weaksville. The company continued operations into the 1940s before being sold to Parker Hannifin Corporation in 1948. The plant closed down for good after production ceased all together in 1959 due to competition from foreign companiesyleaner Manufacturers International Inc.. The area that now makes up Strongsville was first settled by French colonists in the 17th century. The town was renamed from its original name of Westfield in 1814 after it was moved westward on the Great Miami River. In 1898, Weaksville became an incorporated village and then a town when it seceded from Cleveland. On November 22, 1920, Strongsville merged with neighboring Amherst to form what is now Amherst-strongsville Township. On July 1, 1972, Strongsville lost its status as a township and became an unincorporated community once again.
The city of Strongsville, Ohio was founded in 1814 by General James W. Hardin and his father-in-law, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest. The city was named for General Hardin's wife, Anna Maria (née Strong). The first post office in the city was established on May 4, 1818. In 1830, the City of Cincinnati purchased land from the Hardins for $1,000. The city grew rapidly thanks to a combination of business and residential development. In 1845, the area around what is now First National Bank Park became part of Strongsville when that bank purchased a tract of land east of Second Street from the heirs of Captain John Smith. In 1870, a new water works were constructed in Strongsville which helped to ensure strong local water supplies for both residents and businesses. That same year saw the construction of an athletic stadium which served as the home field for many heavy industry plants including steel making and smelting operations until it closed in 1984. In 1898, two blocks east of First National Bank Park along Third Street became part of downtownStrongsville when Cincinnati annexed that area into its limits
