Streetsboro is a town in the US state of Ohio. The population was 9,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the larger Cincinnati metropolitan statistical area. The town was founded in 1794 by General George Rogers Clark and named for his hometown of Streetsboro, Kentucky. In 1801, it became part of what was then called the Northwest Territory. On March 15, 1803, Streetsboro became a part of the Indiana Territory and on July 4, 1827 it became a part of the United States as an independent state. In 1838, Streetsboro passed a new ordinance that prohibited slavery within its borders; this ordinance has been cited as one of the earliest examples of anti-slavery sentiment in America. The town also passed an ordinance providing for free public education to all residents from Kindergarten through High School. According to legend, abolitionist John Brown attempted to raid Carswell House in Streetsboro on November 12th,1839 but was driven off by its defenders who had armed themselves with shotguns and pistols. On December 1st 1840, Streetsboro celebrated its incorporation into the Union as an independent state with a market day parade and ballgame between its two neighboring towns - Dayton and Springfield - both being attended by President James K Polk along with other dignitaries including General Andrew Jackson and Secretary to State James Kellar Young. In 1870-71 Streetsboro erected a large wooden schoolhouse which served as their first government building (the current courthouse replaced it in 1922). On February 6th 1861 during American Civil War: Confederate forces under Colonel Robert E Lee attacked local stores while supplies were being unloaded at Carson Ferry Landing on the Scioto River; no injuries were reported however over 100 homes were destroyed or damaged resulting in $5 million worth in property damage alone ($ when adjusted for inflation). On February 10th 1861 following Confederate victory at Fredericksburg: Houses situated near downtown streetsborough burned down after Rebels burned munitions stored there against orders from Richmond commander Pemberton (). This event is considered another skirmish fought near downtown streetsborough during American Civil War where neither side suffered any casualty
