Polk appointed George Stephenson as head engineer for building two new trunk lines connecting Chicago and Cincinnati through Indiana and Ohio respectively; Stephenson convinced local farmers to give up their land for this project which helped spur development around Stow including mills, meatpacking plants, schools, churches and hospitals . Over time many other businesses have opened up around Stow such as Royall Paper Company (now known as Dow Corning) which started making paper products out of corn stalks back in 1892 (the first such company), J&L Walker Boot & Shoe Factory which began manufacturing shoes here in 1896 and multiple breweries including Askew Brewery (now known as Adirondack Brewing) which got its start here with brewing beer from corn alcohols back in 1840
