Stow is a small town in the United States, located in the southern portion of Ohio. It is part of the Ashland–Richmond County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,241 at the 2010 census. The name Stow comes from Old French "Stowe" meaning "a ford over a stream". The first settler in what would become Stow was John Underwood, who arrived in 1788. He named his new land after his paternal grandfather and namesake, Sir John Underwood of Hadfield in Sussex, England. The village of Stow first appeared on maps as early as 1812. In 1819, it became an incorporated town when all of northwestern Ohio was organized as a county. By 1830, Stow had an Amos Wigglesworth store and schoolhouse. A post office was established at Stow in 1837; it remained open until 1893. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S Grant's army passed through Ashland on its way to Cincinnati via Perrysburg and Chardonnay Creek Bridge (nowBridgeport Road). Confederate skirmishers were seen along both sides of the creek and some reports say that General Grant ordered them burned if they weren't eliminated quickly! That day there were only five people living in what is now known as downtown Stow-on-the-Hudson—John Underwood (the original settler), George Frisbie (of Philadelphia), Mary Hinson (of Liverpool) and her daughter Martha Pomeroy (born Dec 1st 1818)—and their families plus one servant girlservant named Hannah King who assisted Mrs. Frisbie with cooking and laundry services while she lived with her parents & sisters at 227 Main Street during this time period... folks generally worked outdoors these days so there wasn't much need for indoor facilities back then! In 1863 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman made his headquarters campground near present day Akron off Woodbury Rd just east of I-70 exit 15A just south of junction with US-421 which he called Deep Bottom because he believed that no other command could hold such a large area so close to enemy lines without being attacked by him or allowing him to cross into Ohio! Sherman moved his forces out across I-70 about two miles north from where Deep Bottom Camp now stands on July 16th 1863 - thus forfeiting any claim to Deep Bottom Camp site! As mentioned earlier today America's 4teenth Infantry Regiment fought their way upriver from Fort Harrison Revisited up Big Beaver Creek against overwhelming odds June 14th 1862 under orders given by Brigadier General Joseph Hooker USArmy Commander Southwestern District Indiana Territory Heavy Cavalry Brigade commanded by Major General John Nicolini
