Stow, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Hancock County. The population was 6,752 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Scioto River and is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Stow" is most likely derived from Indian settlement in what is now Stow Township in 1812 and from French settlers who called it Hache (hache meaning "a post or stake"). Italian families also settled there early in the 19th century. In 1810, John Crampton donated land to form what became Hancock County; he named it for his friend, James Henshaw Stowe, a Revolutionary War soldier and justice of the peace in Livingston County. The first post office was established in 1795; it changed its name to Stow when it moved to its present location. The township was organized on November 3, 1824 by an act of the General Assembly and named for George Washington Stowe (1755-1832), one of two cosponsors of that year's Republican Party platform whose residence lay within its borders. At first, only white men were allowed to vote; but by 1830 black residents had become well-represented through representation on township committees and as jurors throughout much of central OH until integration began fully under federal law in 1965/66 following passage of Civil Rights Act Amendments (1962). In 1837, due to increased population growth and railroad development, Stow incorporated as a city. In 1902 it merged with Cincinnati to form the current city of Cincinnati. The town has been host to many notable events such as the First World War (1914-18), baseball’s American Association season (1892-93), and the Fourth of July (1976). It also played a significant role in American history through its contributions to both political parties and culture.
In 1812, Stow was founded by Nicholas Stow on the Scioto River. The town grew rapidly and soon had a mill, grocery store, and school. In 1828, the Erie Canal was completed and allowed for more trade between the United States and Great Britain. This new opportunity caused increased demand for goods from Stow, which led to an increase in jobs in the town. By 1840, Stow had a population of around 850 people. It continued to grow until 1870 when it reached its peak with 1,500 residents.
