Stow is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton metropolitan area. The name "Stow" means "settlement by the woods." The first post office in Stow was established on January 1, 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on December 31, 1846. The town site was platted in 1836 by George Washington Brown and James Moulton Morrill; both men were natives of New York City. They named the town for General Isaac Stonewall Jackson who had fought against Federal forces during the Mexican-American War. The village of Northville (later Northport) was founded near present day Stowan on April 17, 1837 by Peter Burnett and his brother Jacob Burnett. On July 8 of that year, they sold to Amos Kendall their land east of what is now Main Street and west of Watkins Road for $1ADM. Of this initial purchase, only about half remains today as Burnett's farmstead still stands within sight of downtown Stowan limits today. On February 11, 1840 Benjamin Fenton purchased from Kendall all remaining shares in Northville Village from Amos Kendall for $10ADM+. He also bought two lots located between First Avenue north and Second Avenue south from John Hynesbeck for $2ADM+. This total purchase included most or all of what would become downtown Stowan today including present day Main Street and Watkins Road . Stow is a small city in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Lawrence and Ottawa counties. The first European settlers in what is now Stow were Quakers who came from England in 1797. They built a gristmill on the riverside of what is now downtown Stow and began to trade with other parts of Ohio and Michigan. In 1814, Stow became part of the Union Territory of Indiana under US President James K. Polk. In 1834, after several unsuccessful attempts by local officials to get a canal built through town, developer George Stephenson finally got approval from Congress for the Erie Canal Company to build a canal through town. Construction started in 1835 but quickly bogged down due to lack of money and engineering skills among some of the project's key participants including Stephenson himself. The townspeople rallied around him and helped finance additional construction using their earnings as residents boom-boomed as new businesses sprang up along the canal corridor including breweries (the first such business in what is now Stow) and tanneries (the first such business in UpperLawrence County). In 1840, when both branches of the Erie Canal met at Niagara Falls north of Buffalo New York, large numbers of people turned out for an stoplight parade that passed by downtown Stow on Canalside Street before continuing eastward across Lake Ontario into Canada; this event is generally considered to be one of the most notable civic events in early American history. By 1865, much about downtown Stow had changed with many new buildings being erected following fire prevention regulations mandated during Reconstruction Era America which aimed to rebuild post-Civil War society following its difficult experiences including military occupation (1865-1868). By 1870 population totals stood at 14 residences while 3 stores still operated commercially within limits set by state legislature limiting retail sales only within specific districts within city limits; all but 1 store closed by 1890 according to 1880 census results[1].
