Stow is a small, unincorporated community in Warren County, Ohio, United States. The population was 593 at the 2000 census. It is located on the eastern border of the county and is northeast of Akron. The first settler in Stow was John Hargrave in 1800. By 1825, there were two stores and six houses in the town. A post office was established here in 1829, and by 1850 it had a population of fifty-six residents. In 1875, Stow had seven businesses and thirteen residents. By 1880, however, only four businesses remained and ten residents lived here; the townsite became a part of Warren County. In 1898, an act to create new counties within Warren County was approved by the Ohio General Assembly; Stow fell within this newly created township (Warren Township No. 4). The name change from "Stow" to "Warren Township No." 4 occurred on November 3 of that year when it became evident that most of what once constituted "Stowe" would be annexed byAkron during its growth as an industrial center following World War I (the war brought increased production jobs to Akron). A post office operated here until 1923; then it was discontinued due to lack of mail volume. A store opened here in 1925 which served as the nucleus for what would become known as The Gilded Age Store Inc., one of Warren Township's longest-standing businesses still running today (it closed its doors in 1984). In 1951, eight miles northwest of Stowe along State Route 627 intersected Ulysses S Grant Avenue making it possible for business people from nearby Cleveland to come into town for shopping purposes only - not for residential living or farming purposes like earlier! Although much has changed since then - with development taking place all around town - aspects such as The Gilded Age Store remain unchanged: providing retail services primarily to locals rather than visitors or commuters alike! Today's commercial district began expanding eastward after being bypassed by larger settlements on either side during development over time while smaller efforts have been made throughout Warren Township overall to keep local traditions alive including several festivals each year including May Day Parade & Craft Fair
