In 1836, Stow was founded by Nicholas J. Brown and his family. The town became a center for gun trade and manufacturing due to its location at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. In 1847, John Brown & Co., agun store that later became John Fenton's Sons Colt Firearms, was opened in Stow. The town saw an increase inWeapon production during the late 1800s as Almira Gun Manufacturing Company (now Smith & Wesson) built a factory on Cedar Street in 1881. The city of Cleveland annexed Stow in 1907, but gun manufacturing still continued until the early 1960s when it peaked with production at around 350 guns per day. However, over time gun manufacturers closed their doors throughout Northeast Ohio due to competition from newer Edited firearms manufactories located in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Stow was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Stowe and his brother John as a post office named "Newcastle." In 1831, the name change to "Muncie" because of the growing population of Indians living near the town. In 1839, it became "Stow Township". The township seat moved from Newcastle to Stow on November 3, 1850. On December 1, 1870, it became part of Cleveland when that city was formed from portions of Butler and Stark counties. The city's economy depends largely on agriculture and manufacturing including textiles such as clothing and underwear; plastics; automobiles; trucking and automotive parts; food processing; construction materials such as cement and masonry; aluminum production; steel production; dairy farming operations including cheese making and milk products marketing businesses such as those for ice cream or yogurt

Stow was founded in 1812 by Nicholas Stowe. The town was named for Nicholas Stowe, a Revolutionary War veterans who donated land to the town. The first settler in the town was John C. Harper, who built a log cabin in what is now the Stow Historic District on March 6, 1813. The old courthouse and jail were both built in 1834. In 1839, Stow became one of the townships of Holmes County, Ohio. It was annexed by Cleveland in 1854 and became part of the city of Cleveland. In 1907, the population of Stow was 947 and it had a schoolhouse and two grocery stores. A post office operated from 1814 to 1907 in Stow.
