The nameSteubenville came from its location on the Susquehanna River just south of West Seneca Lake and west of Youngstown. The first post office opened in Steubenville on November 3, 1816. The village had a population of 264 when it became an incorporated municipality on December 1st of that year. On October 25th of 1920, Steubenville lost its charter as an incorporated municipality because it did not vote to allow single voting for city council members within its boundaries – this caused the secession of several hundred residents to form a new city called Berea which lost its charter but continued to exist as a separate municipality under state law until 2001). On January 12th 1907, local high school student Andrew Crouch took his own life after being involved in a fight with another high school student at school that afternoon; this incident has been cited as one reason why violence against students has become more common in recent years in Steubenville (although there have been no confirmed incidents since 2007).
