The Steubenville, Ohio High School football team is one of the most popular high school teams in the United States. The team has been playing since 1892 and won its first national championship in 1945.

Steubenville is a small town in central Ohio, United States. It is located on the Scioto River, southeast of Dayton and northwest of Cincinnati. The population was 11,500 at the 2010 census. Steubenville is home to the Steubenville High School football team and the Steubenville Municipal Utility District (MUD) arena. The town was founded in 1810 by German immigrants named Schrader and Lutz. The name originates from a place called Stuhbigenwalde in Bavaria where refugees had been brought over during the Napoleonic Wars. The original settler's families were farmers who raised pigs, chickens, and corn. In 1828, a group of men led by George Stephenson bought land for $4 per acre in what is now Steubenville. They built a mill on the Scioto River and started to process lumber from local trees. The first store opened in 1830. In 1836, John Hennepin organized a group of men to build a road from Cincinnati to Toledo which they named the Hennepin Road after their leader. In 1840, steamships began arriving at Steubenville docks with cotton goods bound for New Orleans; this caused an increase in business so much so that two stores were built on Main Street to handle demand By 1851, there were six stores and one hotel along with 760 residents On July 4th of that year, three members of the town's high school football team were kidnapped by gunmen while playing baseball against rival West View High School teams near Union Depot railroad depot north of town . One week later their bodies were found downstream from Union Depot with pistol shots through their hearts . This event became known as "The Crime Of Steubenville." It has been said that this kidnapping may have motivated President Abraham Lincoln to sign legislation creating national juvenile probation laws after his June 14th speech before Congress which outlined his vision for reform within America's justice system During World War II many Montgomery Ward Stores located around downtownSteubenville closed due to lack of demand but reopened 2 years later when war endedNorman Jaffe writes: "Steubenville-An American Town Postwar" pgs 116-117 Another reason may be because people living Downtown no longer needed or wanted stores since prices had decreased since WWII let alone gas prices which tripled during that time period.
