The Steubenville, Ohio school shooting occurred on September 14, 2014, when a gunman opened fire at the high school in the town of Steubenville, Ohio killing three students and wounding six others. The shooter has been identified as 17-year-old Montero Holmes. The tragedy began with a fight between two groups of students outside the school. One group was led by an older student, Ma'lik Richmond, who called for backup from other students. soon after he left the scene gunshots could be heard coming from inside the school A SWAT team arrived to investigate and found three victims dead inside: one shot in the head while exiting the building; another shot through open door; and a third killed when they came to try and apprehend Holmes. Steubenville, Ohio is a town in Noble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,354 at the 2010 census. It became a city in 2002. The name of the town comes from Steubenville Township and Steubenville Ferry on the Monongahela River. The first Europeans to visit Steubenville were French traders and missionaries who landed there for refuge in 1795 during the Northwest Indian War. They built a log cabin on the banks of the river in 1796 and named it "Steubenville", after George Washington's birthplace in Virginia. In 1802, a group of seven German immigrants founded what would become Steubenville Township. The township was one of five original townships created by William Cranch under Special Act No. 5 of 1802. The first president of Steubenville Township was Nicholas Biddle (1813-1888). He served as treasurer and justice of peace for Noble County before he died suddenly at age 60 while attending an agricultural fair near Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1868. John Fenton (1814-1877) succeeded Biddle as president of the township and held that office until his death two years later at age 73 years old. Fenton is considered to be one of the most significant figures in municipal government in Ohio history because he helped create zoning regulations which allowed for growth withinSTEUBENVILLE TOWNSHIP limits without having to go through lengthy hearings or vote on ordinances; this law still applies today! He also helped found Grafton Academy (now Grafton University), which opened its doors to students on September 15th, 1850! He is buried along with other notable township officials at Oak Hill Cemetery located just outside STEUBENVILLE! The late 1800s saw great growth opportunities for STEUBENVILLE as new milling industries developed throughout America: meatpacking plants such as Pillsbury Meat Packers Ltd., Armour y Iron Works Inc., Jellico Coal & Coke Co., Bethlehem Steel Corp., National Broadcasting Corporation’s CBS Radio Company bought land nearby for their broadcasting studios; steamship lines started running directly between Pittsburgh and Cleveland; steamboats brought goods downriver from Cincinnati into STEUBENVILLE; automobile manufacturing began moving into STEUBENVILLE from Middletown and other parts of Ohio;and many people moved into STEUBENVILLE from surrounding villages beginning around 1915 when TELEPHONE SERVICE became available through private companies like AT&T à la carte service . At its peak population around 1920 there were over 1,000 residents living inside THE COMMUNITY THAT WATCHED THE WORLD ! However during World War II things changed quickly as many factories closed due to wartime production restrictions butSteubenville continued to grow economically because it became home to numerous military installations including Fort Knox Army Airfield - now known as Wright Patterson Air Force Base - US Naval Stations here at Corydon Harbor - now known as Naval Weapons Station Whitewater - NATO Allied Forces Command HQ - post office etcetera both local businesses flourished thanks largely to GI Bill requirements that all citizens must have some form Of paid employment !! Finally by 1970 approximately 95% OF THE POPULATION WAS NONRESIDENT CITIZENS WITH ACCESS TO EDUCATION THROUGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS !! ensuing rapid suburbanization led much social activism over issues such as high school graduation rates among young adults not being good enough ADULT READING ENGLISH AS A FIRST LANGUAGE . In 1828, John Quincy Adams became the first U.S. president from Ohio and moved his family to Steubenville after he took office. At that time, stevedores from Hamburg, Germany were working in Toledo and other cities along the Great Lakes area; however, they were not allowed to work in Ohio because its laws limited labor to men over 21 years old. TheAdams family remained in Steubenville until 1837 when they moved permanently to Quincy due to political pressure from Hamilton County (now part of Cincinnati). In 1874, Congress passed a law allowing African Americans earning $5 per week or less to be employed as laborers within white society without discrimination; this opened the door for African American entrepreneurs such as James Weldon Johnson and Solomon Stonebridge to start businesses in stevedoring and other unrelated industries. Over time, STEUBENVILLE has become one of America's most integrated communities with both black and white residents living together peacefully side-by-side without any incidents that would lead to social unrest or race riots like those which occurred elsewhere throughout America during this period known as "The Gilded Age."
