Steubenville, Ohio is a small town in the eastern part of Ohio. It is located about 20 miles east of Cleveland and 50 miles west of Cincinnati. The population was 9,883 in 2010. Steubenville is one of two towns in the county of Steubenville Township which form the core of the city-county of Youngstown. The first Europeans to visit Steubenville were Dutch traders who landed there in 1611. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until 1792 when it became part of what is now Pennsylvania. In 1801, Steubenville became a part of Ohio after Ulysses S. Grant won the war for America against Mexico. As a result, much land changed hands and many people moved to Steubenville from other parts of Ohio and Indiana during this time period. In 1922, John Wertheimer opened his famous Wernicke's Brewery in Steubenville which has been located there ever since. The brewery produced over 100 different beers including Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller Lite while also serving as a social center for the community throughout its years operations. In 2002, Wernicke's Brewery merged with Pabst Brewing Company to form Pabst Brewing Corporation which still produces beer today inside and outside the United States as well as internationally (see below). During World War II, STEUBENVILLE took on an important role within American manufacturing due to its location close to major military installations such as Ft Myer and Wright Field (now Dayton Air Force Base) . With production at both plants increasing immensely due to wartime shortages, STEUBENVILLE reached its peak population size around 1945 with 14,000 residents . However by 1951 this had decreased dramatically to 5,500 residents despite continues growth at both factories . Despite this rapid decline however , STEUBENVILLE remains an important economic engine for Youngstown thanks largely to its proximity to major military bases (Ft Myer & Wright Field) along with continued excellence in manufacturing such as plastics products (Pabst Blue Ribbon) Today's Society: There are few things that can truly defineSteubenville these days; either because it has slowly begun moving away from being known primarily for manufacturing or because it increasingly relies upon services like internet cafes or retailers that do not require product production anymore (cf Wal-Mart ).
