Steubenville, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. The name "Steubenville" is derived from the German word "Stuttgart," meaning "place of learning." The town was first created in 1811 when two settlers named Steuben and Weigel bought land east of the river Scioto about what is now the eastern edge of Steubenville Township. In 1816, stevedores who worked on the Scioto River were part of a group that founded Steubenville Village which included merchants Adam Smith and John Wilkinson. In 1828, John DeWitt Cooke surveyor for Muskingum County surveyed what is now Steubenville Township and filed a plat with the township trustees dated November 5th, 1828. On December 3rd of that year he laid out a new township including much of what is now Steubenville Township. On July 26th, 1830 Nicholas Hirsch sold to Reubens heirs 1/2 mile (1 km) north of present day Park Street in section 10 East (later section 12 North), lots 6 & 7 west side thereof for $4 per acre or £0 0s 2d without water source being given for said lots until such time as improvements may be made thereon by his heirs or assigns. This lot also includes all present day sections 11 & 12 North. This deed has been quoted as proof that there were actually two townships formed in Stuttgart; one to the east and one to the west of where Park Street currently stands. It's interesting to note that this triangular piece of land would eventually become home to downtown Steubenville proper while other sections became homes for farmers and small businesses like shops and churches near current-day Canton Road and US Route 11

This early village contained just twelve houses and no mills or other businesses because there were not yet roads or bridges to connect it with the rest of Cincinnati. The first mill in Steubenville was built by Isaac Neely in 1815; it turned out flour for local markets and also produced cheese for export to England. By 1820, steamship travel had made STEUBENVILLE an important seaport on the Upper Great Lakes; so much so that when President James K. Polk sent troops to fight Spanish forces at Vera Cruz during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), steamer passengers brought news back about hostilities from Mexico City before sailing back upriver to Cincinnati aboard steamboats like steamers "Columbia" and "Celestial". In 1824–25, John Smeaton erected a gristmill northwest of downtown on Canfield Creek which probably served as the first commercial enterprise in what would becomeSteubenville proper – until then all land east of Main Street consisted almost entirely of agricultural holdings used for feeder cattle operations throughout much of this period (eastern portions are included within today’s city limits) . In 1850, stone walls were erected around most or all of downtown following fire damage caused by lightning on July 3rd while men were working inside one building engaged in masonry work adjacent to Main Street . As late as 1860 only one block northwest existed prior to being destroyed by fire August 10th while workers were putting up new pavement near First African Baptist Church Also note that although Main Street ran due east/west through downtown until its truncation due westward sometime after 1840 most business activities took place along Market Street which runs perpendicular thereto
