It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Cleveland-Akron-Muncie Combined Statistical Area. Steubenville is home to Steubenville High School and murals honoring America's "Four Horsemen" are on display in two blocks north of downtown. The area that would become Steubenville was first settled by German Americans in 1810 as Amherst Township. In 1821, it became part of Ross County and was named after Nicholas Steuben, an American Revolutionary War general who had fought for George Washington. The name “Steubenville” originated from early settler John Sassaman’s observation that the Susquehanna River flowed through what he called “a beautiful valley” with rolling hillsides around it. In 1825, when Ross County merged with Lake Erie Township to form Stark County, Amherst Township remained within Stark County until it became part of Steubenville in 1827. In 1830, land east of Amherst township were surveyed for a post office which was founded on January 8th by James Pemberton and Amos Kendall; both men were natives of New York City and came to Steubenville to open up new territory for settlers after experiencing difficulty finding space on their arrival in Ohio Territory. On November 3rd 1830, General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Amherst Township where he met with local leaders including Pemberton about plans for military occupation of eastern Ohio should Mexico declare war on America following its independence from Spain (the Mexican-American War). After discussing matters with his fellow officers at a tavern near Amherst Township, Sherman left for Stroudsburg to lead his division against General Philip Sheridan's army near Perrysburg on November 9th 1830 while Pemberton took command of forces defendingAmherst Township from Indian attack that day; this event is generally considered to be the start of the Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended six days later when General Sherman arrived back at Stroudsburg and discovered most if not all his troops had run away or deserted him during his absence[1][2]. According to one estimate,[3] between 1800[4] and 1840 about 60% or more German immigrants living in northeast Ohio worked as farmers; however by 1860 only 10% or so still lived there.[5][6] Nonagricultural employment also increased significantly between 1800 and 1840 due largely to importation patterns resulting from increasing demand brought about by technological advances such as steamboats[7]; however this industry declined significantly after 1840 due primarily to lack access to good transportation infrastructure[8]. nonetheless some Germans did manage successful businesses outside agriculture including furriers/tanneries (1830–1860), glassmakers (1800–1860), soap manufacturers (1800–1850), brewers (1790s–1820s) & schleppers/packagers (1790s).[9][10] To increase agricultural production during timesof economic recession Dutch Friesian workers supplementing native English speakers employed mainly during lumbering periods could also be found working alongside farmers but they eventually lost their jobs during regular business cycles leadingresses replaced them after 1850 although some continued working into [the present day], providing service connected activities such as mailbox delivery

Steubenville was founded in 1814 by German immigrants and again founded in 1829 as a result of the Panic of 1837. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1907. The community of Steubenville was platted on December 12, 1814, by George Steuben and his brother Jacob Steuben. The name "Steubenville" was derived from a small stream that ran through the town. George Steuben had come to America from Germany in 1786 and he married Susannah (Henschel) Ziegler on June 6, 1800. They owned land near present-day Easton Township and built a home there called Deutschhaus (German House). In 1824 they moved to what is now west side of Main Street where they built another home which they named Deutsche Haus (Dutch House). On November 25, 1830 – one year after the death of George Steuben – their son Johnathan Geo., Jr., born October 10th, 1830 at Deutschhaus died suddenly while playing with friends outside his home and may have been poisoned because authorities could not determine whether or not he had eaten anything that could have caused such an effect. In 1833 Electa Junker became pregnant with her second child but did not tell her husband for fear that he would leave her if she told anyone about their pregnancies; this made them ineligible for social security benefits due to their immigration status at the time She eventually gave birth to a baby boy who was christened Augustus but only known as Augustus because his mother did not want him given any religious symbols associated with German culture so she chose instead Christian names like John or Simon (John Gottlieb Oswald). Electa then decided to change her last name back to Ziegler so that everyone would know who she really belonged to no matter what happened with Augustus later on On February 11th1834 young George Stephenson walked into the local store - Zion's Retreat - wearing nothing more than his stockinginged feet and demanding goods be brought out for him because he needed socks for work as a laborer involved in building new steamboats on the Monongahela River; also participating were three other men: William Frye*, James Mosely* & Joseph McGraw*. When store owner Solomon Thurston refused to give these men any items--or even let them inside--George Stephenson pulled out a knife and stabbed Thurston 4 times before fleeing the scene Thurston survived but lost most of his blood . Afterwards several people came forward claiming responsibility including two police officers Daniel Webster & Abraham Van Wagenen* who arrested Stephenson immediately * As it turned out George Stephenson had actually planned this burglary all along! He had gone into Solomon Thurston's store just prior to stabbing him as part of a larger scheme designed to get away with robbery * One can only imagine how terrified shopkeepers must have been when faced with such an armed intruder!
