In 1821, Benjamin Fenton purchased land from the Sauk Indians for $100 Negroes (then worth about $10 per acre). He built a gristmill along the Scioto River and named it Fenton's Mill after himself. The mill operated until 1854 when it was destroyed by fire. However, this did not mean that business as usual stopped at Fenton's Mill; in fact, during its short life span, it employed many locals including Daniel Webster and William McKinley during their early political careers. In addition to its flour milling activity however, Fenton's also manufactured lumber and other goods such as saddles and horseshoes. The following year saw another milestone in Steubenville history when Abraham Lincoln made an appearance before a large crowd at Fenton's Mill during his naturalization ceremony; he would later become one of its most significant employers due to his involvement with local politics withinsteubenvilleno
