Steubenville, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Potter County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Steubenville–Muncie border. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1824 and named after George Steuben, a Revolutionary War veteran and delegate from Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress. In 1827, the settlement became a part of Ohio Township. The township seat was moved to present-day Steubenville in 1830. The town developed as a small agricultural community with narrow streets and simple architecture typical of rural America during the 19th century. Its nameakes derived from two rivers which cross its borders: the Scioto River to the north and the Monongahela River to the south. Because it lay within boundaries of both Indiana and Pennsylvania until 1888 when it became part of Ohio, Steubenville enjoyed relatively high levels of trade with those states during its early years. However, economic fluctuations in America caused many farmers to abandon their properties in Steubenville during the late 19th century for new opportunities in other parts of Ohio or elsewhere in North America. This trend continued into the 20th century as farming techniques changed and land became more difficult to find for farmers who could not rely on traditional methods such as irrigation or crop rotation . In 1924, George Steube (1811-1875) donated land along one of his three river crossings (the other two were at West Uniontown and South Portsmouth) so that people could build homes if they desired; this donation helped establish what is now known as "George's Garden" neighborhood near downtown Steubenville.. In 1925-1926 he also donated $5 per capita towards construction costs for a public schools system which served much of eastern Potter County then; this effort led eventually to local school districts being organized inland around Cleveland.. For many years thereafterSteubevillians referred collectively to themselves simply as "We". After World War II many residents left for new opportunities due primarily to technological advancements which made Farming more dependent on input prices rather than direct sunlight ..
