On September 15, 1877, a group of white men and boys were arrested for raping an enslaved girl in Steubenville. A grand jury indicted 16 people, including 13 whites and 3 African Americans, on charges of conspiracy and rape. The trial dragged on for months with little news or public attention aside from minor skirmishes between the two groups. Ultimately, only 2 people were found guilty: one white man was sentenced to life imprisonment while the other received a year in prison. This event is also widely known as "The Steubenville Rape."
