Springfield, Ohio is a small city in the southern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located on the Scioto River and is served by two airports - Springfield- Rolla and Dayton- Wright Laboratory. The population was 21,509 at the 2010 census, making it the 43rd largest city in Ohio and its ninth largest city outside of Cincinnati/The Hamilton County metropolitan area. Springfield also has a second airport, Greater Springfield Airport which serves as a reliever airport for Dayton-Wright Laboratory. The name “Springfield” comes from an early English settlement that was established there in 1795 by Joshua Green and others. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Springfield were Quakers who founded the town in 1795 because they wanted to avoid religious conflict with nearby Cincinnati which had become a Christian community soon after their arrival there from Pennsylvania. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Scioto River and its easy access to transportation including wagon trains running from Philadelphia downriver each way to bring materials needed for construction along with goods bought back as souvenirs from visits by travelers. In 1814, when General Andrew Jackson was elected president, he moved his headquarters from Nashville, Tennessee to Cairo, Illinois where he built his presidential mansion before returning eastward in 1815 and settling permanently at Springfield where he became an important figure in both politics and business during his time as president. In 1825, Congress passed an act providing for slavery within the United States but no one lived or worked within reach of Springfield until free black people started moving there beginning in earnest around 1830 after free black people had been living near Cincinnati sinceoonside slave auctions began taking place there only days after western explorers discovered America’s new landmass while sailing upriver towards what would become Cincinnati
