Springfield is an unincorporated community in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 575. The community was named for Springfield Township in Sandusky County, Ohio. It lies near the intersection of State Routes 18 and 136. When Greene County merged with Sterling Township to form Mahoning Township on November 3rd, 1827, it happened at a time when very few municipalities had formed outside of Toledo proper due to lack of interest or support from either party In order for Springfield to be annexed into township it would need approval from both parties involved - something it received on January 1st 1830 with voting tallying 397 against annexation while 137 in favor After much discussion between township leaders John Gadsden and Abraham Lincoln - who served as president during that time - Springfield finally joined township on December 15th 1830 becoming one unit with voting rights equal to those enjoyed by neighboring townships . At first many residents failed to recognize their new found status as they continued to identify themselves as "township citizens" rather than "springfieldians".
