Springfield, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Clark County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 31,898. The city was founded in 1817 by Pierre Caron and others as a small settlement on the Scioto River near what is now Springfield Township. In 1839, it became part of the newly formed Athens–Middletown Union School District; in 1868, it became part of Athens Township again. It adopted its current name in 1907 after being chosen as one of four finalists for an award granted to towns that have made progress since their incorporation into the United States. The first settlers in Springfield were Methodist missionaries who came from nearby Middletown about 1800 and established a church there in 1801. A post office called Springfield was established at this site on October 16, 1807, and remained open until May 15, 1850. The township was organized on November 3, 1817; when it changed its name to Clark County on December 17th due to increased population growth within then-Clark County (then including parts of present-day Athens Township), Springfield became an incorporated village with a full power to levy taxes and make decisions without approval from either township or county officials.
