One of the first places that firearms were commonly carried in Springfield, Ohio was at the local post office. In 1853, a small shotgun shop called "The Rifle House" was opened by Rufus King. During World War II, Springfield housed several USAAF airfields which produced munitions such as bombs and rockets. One of these locations was Terminal 3 at 21st Avenue and Spring Street which produced aircraft parts such as engines and propellers. After the war ended, Terminal 3 closed down and all of its materials were taken away to be used in new projects elsewhere in town. It is interesting to note that Terminal 3 is still standing today - it has been completely renovated into an apartment complex!
Springfield, Ohio is a town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 20,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Springfield Township was James Withers who arrived there in 1799. He and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Springfield Township. In 1814, John Fenton purchased land from Withers and laid out a town block on the east side of High Street between Bellefontaine Square and Centre Avenue. This first Springfield was named for John Fenton's father-in-law, Ebenezer Farnsworth, who had settled near modern day Dayton about 1800. In 1825, Jno.[lesson] Deverick bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of High Street from Farnsworth for $2 [$]. This became known as Deverick's Parkland and served as a community center until it burned down in 1854 during an Indian battle that took place nearby. The town site was developed further by George Hallett and others around 1830 when they began purchasing parcels of land north of High Street from farmers to build what would become the nucleus of today's city limits: Hallett Place/ Springfield Heights/ Arlington Heights/Leesburg Heights/Greene Square/Wrightwood Village/Bellefontaine Square/. By 1840 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Springfield with about 2200 residents living there full time or part time according to one estimate In 1861 Abraham Lincoln made his way from Illinois via Cincinnati through Dayton Ohio into central Florida before reaching Springfields settlement where he stopped for two nights while pursuing his candidacy for Vice President against Stephen Douglas; this stop helped establish Springfields importance as a key political staging ground during the Civil War years During World War II much activity took place within downtown Springfield such as research operations conducted by DuPont located at Standish Park while other activities included manufacturing munitions at Pohlman Arsenal which produced more than 500000 rounds of ammunition until 1969 before being closed down Today most people know aboutSpringfield because it has been mentioned frequently throughout History channel programs like “The American Revolution” “The Civil War” etc but little is known about its prewar history
