The original plat included three blocks north of where US Route 43 current intersects US Route 22 which forms the western border of present day Springfield; east of those blocks was land grants given to numerous pioneers including Major Jacob Brown (1764-1837), Isaac Ransom (1775-1853), Ebenezer Farnsworth (1776-1848) and Captain Aaron Burr (1781-1827). One such grant extended from modern day Elmira Road east one block to what is now Main Street/Route 22 northeast of where today's Uniontown Road meets Elmira Road. The first store opened in 1802 at what is now Elmira corner Main Street and Harrison Avenue; this store became known as "Adam's Store." In 1806, Daniel Webster built a tavern on present day State Street just south of Elmira Road which became known as "Webster's Tavern." A man by the name of Haggerty operated an bakery on Elmira corner First Avenue and Harrison Avenue from 1814 until his death in 1830; this business became known as "Haggerty Brothers Bakery" later shortened to "HAGGERTY". In 1821, Wm Cranch opened a tannery on Cedarville Road southeast of downtown; this tannery became known as "Cranch'stanneries." The first post office was established at Springfield on December 8, 1825 by Nathan Lyon under Governor George Clinton’s order.; it continued operation until 1840 when it moved to Wooster under Governor Job Young’s order..
