The town of Springfield, Ohio was named for General John Wayne's home county in Virginia. The first settlers in the area were Among the Pioneers who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. They built a small log cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Springfield. In 1795, Captain Jonathan Dayton founded The Village of Dayton, which had a population of about fifty people. Captain Dayton donated land to the village and gave it its name. At that time, there were no schools in this area so children went to school at home. In 1814, Captain Dayton's son-in-law Ezra Stiles established a store and post office in what is now downtown Springfield. This location served as the center of the community until 1832 when a new courthouse and jail were built at Fourth and College Streets. In 1838, Reverend Elijah Porter organized an Episcopal church here from scratch and named it Zion Church after Mount Zion where Jesus Christ preached his first sermon. Reverend Porter also erected a meeting house, compiler block (now occupied by First National Bank), School House (now occupied by Armour & Co.), Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist Church), United States Land Company building (now occupied by State Street Methodist Episcopal Church), cemetery (now filled with sandbags to keep out developers) and several other buildings including residences for Frontier Park trustees, private millsinery shops run by women spinners from nearby towns such as Lebanon and Berea etc., public square extending along State Street between Fifth Avenue South and Sixth Avenue North - one of only two squares east of the Mississippi River - Army Hospital located adjacent to south side entrance on Commercial Drive then known as Springfields Ferry Landing - Toll House operated by Federal Road Commission from 1836 until ceding control to state government in 1901; As early as 1830s steamboats called at this landing for passengers travelling upriver to Youngstown on Lake Erie; In 1861 during American Civil War President Abraham Lincoln visited Springfield while attending Ford's Theatre near Cincinnati; After Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House three days later President Lincoln ordered His Cavalry under General Ulysses S Grant enter Springfield unopposed; When General Grant took possession he found that all but one street frontage had been taken away or burned down making it impossible for him to build his headquarters here ; From 1865 through 1895 Grange Lodge No 1 Agrarian Society was held here every third Thursday evening led by Grand Master Ebenezer Howe; Many important events occurred here during this time including presidential inauguration ceremonies [Ulysses S.] Grant’s speech before Congress [1865] & Franklin D Roosevelt’s inauguration ceremonies [1933]; Wednesday night “ guerrilla fighting ” elements Scout Squadron 8th Ohio Infantry fought Confederate forces skirmish southeast corner Broad Ripple square southwest corner Elmira avenue between Harrison street corner late 1800s
The first settlement in Springfield was made by the Shawnees in 1795. The town was named after Colonel James Wilkinson, who donated land to the town. The first store in Springfield was built on South Main Street. In 1814, General David Ziegler and his forces lost a battle at Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Cincinnati, Ohio, and the town came under Indian control for a time. With the end of Indian hostilities, Springfield regained its independence and began to grow rapidly. By 1824, it had become one of the most important towns in Ohio. It became an incorporated village in 1834 and became an city in 1847. In 1916, Springfield merged with neighboring Tiffin to form what is now Toledo.
