Springfield has been inhabited by Native American tribes for over three hundred years and became a town in 1836. In 1907, it was made a city after being annexed by Dayton. The first Europeans to visit what is now Springfield were French traders from Quebec who came to trade with the local Conemaugh River tribe in 1795-96. A resident of this village named Nicolas-Jacques Marquette traveled eastward along the Upper Miami River on October 6, 1799, as part of his exploration of that region for French traders looking for new land to trade with natives. He encountered an Indian village located near modern-day Springfield on November 3rd while traveling through that area on his way back downriver towards Fort Wayne (now Indianapolis). This led him to believe he had found a route across the Canadian border into what is now Indiana without having actually crossed that border yet! A post office was established at Springfield Village in 1812, but it did not remain open long due to difficulties getting mail through remote villages like this one!
