Springfield is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 43,609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located just east of downtown Cleveland on Interstate 875. The first Europeans to reach Springfield were French traders in 1688, when they traded goods with the local tribe of Wyandots for furs. The early Virginia Company traders founded a trading post near present-day Springfield in 1789. In 1801, General James Ketchum's army invaded Canada and burned Yorktown, Maryland; this demonstrated United States power and began American expansionism. In 1807, President James Ketchum ordered Major John Stiles to build a fort at Springfield to protect newly acquired land along the Scioto River from British attack. The town site was chosen because it had a deepwater dock where steamboats could moor their vessels for transportation inland or downriver; this enabled Springfield to become one of America's major port cities during its early years as an independent country. In 1812, Congress passed an act incorporating the village of Springdale into Springfield; that same year, settlers from nearby Xenia formed what would become known as Xenia Township (later Xenia Heights). On July 4, 1814, after much political maneuvering by residents and officials alike,[2] voters approved incorporation into Springfield by vote of 2-1%. After the war ended, Springfield returned to its pre-war status as a small agricultural community with some manufacturing activity; however, it has since become one of the most diverse cities in Ohio with a wide range of economic opportunities available to its residents. The downtown area around Springfields Civic Center has been home to many famous local businesses including Jiffy Lube (now Lowe's) and Sears Tower which both opened there during the 1960s/1970s when Main Street corridor was renovated as part of Mayor Tom Campbell's "A Better Way" campaign promise which aimed to improve public transportation options and create new business districts throughout Cincinnati[2]. In addition, other large employers such as Genworth Financial Corporation have moved into new facilities within downtown Springfield over recent years while smaller businesses have continued to locate there including local diners such as Pritchett's Pizza and Luby's Department Store which used to be located across from Arena Football League (AFL) stadium MAPFRE Stadium before being relocated elsewhere within City limits following their purchase by rival Jeffrey Lichtman.[3] It should be noted that much like other urban areas around America these days with explosive growth rates like Phoenix or Dallas etc., parts or entire neighborhoods can quickly disappear if not managed well - something which also applies quite forcibly – especially given that DowntownSpringfield contains significant concentrations ( contiguous blocks )of high-end retail stores adjacent Interstate 80 exits leading out into adjoining suburbs - all without doubt ripe for gentrification through annexation or rezoning by adjacent higher-income residents who may see no need for lower quality retail but will happily foot the bill for more expanded services & amenities provided thereby increasing attractiveness & value proposition offered thereby creating pockets of continuing poverty amid rapid wealth creation .
