The town plat was filed with the Ohio Board of Elections on November 2, 1824 and became effective November 3rd Coverage included portions of present-day Delaware Township as well as areas now located within Barberton Township including parts of Southfield Township (now Defiance Township), Highland Heights Township (now Ionia Heights Township), Northfield Township (now Northridge Village), Westville Borough (now Westville Heights Borough), Bellefontaine Borough (now Bellefontaine Center Borough) Springfield originally consisted only of part of what is now Delaware Township while most parts then lay within Barberton township eastward into present-day Southfield township westward into present day Highland Heights township northward into present day Northridge village northwestward into present day Westville borough eastward However due to growth there soon became an attempt by trustees to annex more territory making PlainFIELD approximately eighty square miles including all but eleven current townships plus much additional land lying beyond these boundaries This process known as “ annexation” or “ tacking” had little impact on everyday life much less economic development because no real people or property changed hands thereby giving rise to continuing confusion about what actually happened . Eventually this ambiguity led to two lawsuits surrounding the issue settled out of court both times resulting mostly in benefits for PlainFIELD residents

The town grew quickly due to its strategic location between two major waterways and its close proximity to Native Americans who were raidsers and traders throughout much of central Ohio during this time period. In 1812, Springfield became part of $10 million land grant given to Hamilton College by President James Kieft in order to promote education among Native American tribes living near Cincinnati and Cleveland on behalf of these two colleges. The college's original buildings were built on today's Main Street which then served as a busy intersection for Indians traveling between their reservations (northwest corner), markets (southwest corner), taverns ( northwest corner ), and churches ( southeast corner ). These structures remain some of Hamilton College's most iconic trademarks including the Hesburgh Library building still used today aswell as parts of Fine Arts Building that housed both classrooms and laboratories until 2006 when they too were demolished to make way for more housing . In 1814, General David Kilpatrick left Cleveland with about 730 men under his command numbering 10 cannons as he marched south towards Cincinnati under orders from President James Kieft not to stop until he had destroyed all hostile indigenous villages or brought back any prisoners taken during this campaign called "The Battle Of Fallen Timbers". After reaching Cincinnati late that night on July 16th he began looting homes while their occupants slept before leaving again early morning next day with only 6 cannons left behind him after destroying 3 villages along his way! On July 17th , 14 years later – at around 4am EDT - he encountered resistance led by Chief Joseph Smallwood at a small village called Fallen Timbers just west off US Route 11 near present day Jobstown . After small skirmish lasting several hourssmall victory was achieved with loss incurred by Kilpatrick himself killed Smallwood instead though many scalps taken captive including Joseph Smallwood himself . This event marks one point where Native American resistance against European settlers evolved into an actual armed conflict resulting in multiple casualties on both sides
The settlement of Springfield, Ohio was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1796. When the United States acquired land east of the Great Lakes in 1803, settlers began to arrive, and by 1820 there were more than 100 people living in the town. The first school was built in 1824, and on October 12, 1830, a town meeting voted to name the new town Springfield after President James K. Polk. The first post office was established in 1827, and in 1840 Springfield became a part of Indiana Territory. In 1845 Springfield became a part of Ohio Territory and remained that way until 1907 when it changed its name to Springfield Township. In 1916 Springfield Township absorbed portions of Muskegon Heights Township and Beech Grove Township to form what is now called Commerce Township.
