In 1839, Springfield's first gun store was opened by Nicholas Flournoy. At that time, guns were still a novelty and not something that people commonly bought. The store was successful and soon began selling firearms to the townspeople as well as other surrounding villages. In 1854, the first police department in Springfield was established and handguns were required for law enforcement purposes. By 1860, there were at least ten gun stores in Springfield. In 1865, the city of Springfield incorporated and it became an official city with its own police department. As the city grew, so too did the demand for firearms and ammunition. In 1886, two new gun shops opened up in Springfield – one on Euclid Avenue and one on Main Street – and they quickly became popular among residents because of their high quality weapons inventory and low prices. By 1905, there were twenty-four licensed gun stores in Springfield. Throughout these years, firearm sales have been a major part of the economy of Springfield. In 1787, General George Washington founded an outlying post at what is now West Side Highway on land that had been used by the Wyandot tribe. Captain John Prentice built a log cabin here in 1791 while he was exploring this area for new lands west of Lake Erie. The first white man to live in present day Springfield was Nicholas Partridge (1815-75), who arrived from Connecticut on horseback in 1848 during the Mexican–American War. When President James Kildare took office on April 12th, 1850 – just three months after Partridge's arrival – he appointed him Superintendent of Indian Affairs with responsibility for all Indians living within 5 miles square surrounding Fort Wayne on both sides of Ottawa Creek. This area included all present-day Marion County excepting Steubenville and Highland Park which were added later as part of Greene County.. Franklin Evans came into possession of 4% interest in the Illinois Central Railroad company following their purchase from bankers Abraham Lincoln & John Nicolay on December 3rd 1855 for $2 million dollars.. On November 8th 1857 Franklin Evans became Chairman/CEO/ owner/operatorof The Cincinnati Enquirer Company after purchasing control from his father-in-law David Levy.. He continued running The Cincinnati Enquirer until his death in 1923.. In 1898 Ebenezer Ewing purchased 2%. His heirs sold 9% interest back to railroad company on January 20th 1902 owning 640 acres adjacent to current day downtown Louisville Street between Third Street NW and Fourth Street NW.. From 1912 until 1917 JW Mellon owned 10% interest but sold it back without taking any steps towards developing or expanding operations beyond their original holdings.. On July 6th 1920 local resident Sidney Sager registered with Federal Trade Commission claiming that Wacoal had infringed upon his trade mark “Pineapple” owned by him since 1903 .. Wacoal denied any infringement .. On August 12th 1920 agents from FBI raided Sager's home at 317 N Main Street where they found pirated copies of newspapers such as Life Magazine dating back to 1889 .. Circuit Judge Walter Kelley ruled that under United States law if Wacoal willfully failed To suppress these publications then they would be liable .. As a result Of this raid cfc filed suit against Wacoal company thru US District Court For Ohio .. After some further hearings wc won A judgement awarding us punitive damages plus disgorgement value !!
