The Springfield Armory was a firearms manufacturer located in the town of Springfield, Ohio. It was founded by George Armistead and David Chapman in 1814 as the first gun store in what is today Ohio. The company became one of the most well-known firearms manufacturers in America and produced rifles, pistols, shotguns, and armor piercing ammunition. The Armory also manufactured hats for military use. In 1838, the armory moved to its present location on Main Street in Springfield. In 1865, the Armory was acquired by Samuel Winchester & Sons who renamed it Winchester Repeating Arms Company. At Winchester Repeating Arms Company, hat manufacturing continued until 1986 when it merged with Danforth Firearms Corporation to form DanforthDanforth Firearms Corporation.
