This period saw growth in both businesses and population as well as development in such areas as transportation (the first railroad arrived in 1837) and housing (a number of log cabins were built around this time). At its peak enrollment during World War II (1939–1945), Springfield had over 45 stores and 1100 residents; today its population numbers just over 20 thousand due to declines nationwide in shopping mall attendance and suburban growth statewide since then." On October 15th 1860 Illinois General Assembly passed House Bill No 2 giving all men over 21 years old within two miles of any village without prohibition vote permission to form themselves into companies with fifty votes each for president & directors general - this company should be known as "Springfield Township", but no such township ever formed It has been said that when George Stephenson built his railroad through this part of central Ohio he knew that Springfield would be its next stop – soon after he laid track between Dayton and Youngstown he heard stories about Indians camped along these same tracks eating their dead horses – so convinced was Stephenson of this fact that he offered bribes to some influential people before construction started" springfieldspringfieldsburgh
