In 1859, Ohio's first airgun company was founded in Springfield. The company manufactured single-shot pistols and shotguns using Indian bullets. The area around the present day intersection of Springfield Avenue and North High Street was once home to several manufacturing businesses used to produce firearms including: John R. Brown & Sons gunsmithing shop, W.H. Greyson foundry, and J.W. Baird’s blacksmith shop (now part of the Cincinnati Armory). The city of Springfield also saw a significant expansion in its gun industry during this time with the opening of several new stores catering to the firearms market as well as new restaurants serving Firearms-related refreshments such as whiskey neat or Colt revolvers for sale by the bottle or case. By 1865, both Brown & Greyson and Baird had closed their doors due to competition from east Texas' Colt revolver factory which had opened up in nearby Dayton that year. However, Springfield's long history with firearm production continued with another business being founded soon afterward called Globe Arms Company who produced pump guns using shotgun shells filled with buckshot or birdshot rounds instead of Indian bullets. This particular type of airgun was later adapted to fire slugs which allowed for greater accuracy when hunting small game such as squirrels or rabbits. In 1881, Globe Arms Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company forming what is now known as Winchester Ammunition Corporation which continues manufacture of ammunition products today through its subsidiaries including American Eagle Ammunition Co., El Paso Ammunition Co., Scrappy’s Ammo Co., Hungary recoilless rifle manufacturer Magpul Industries Pte., and Remington Outdoor Company Inc..

In 1946, Mayor Harry Crouch persuaded General Lucius Clay (the founder of American Motors) to move his company from Flint Michigan toSpringfield so that it could be closer to consumers across both states. This success led Clayto invest more money in developing downtown Springfield and create numerous parks and boulevards within the city limits
