In 1907-1908, Chatman erected a large wood frame building on Main Street which still stands as one of Springdale’s most prominent landmarks today. That same year saw another milestone for Springdale when it became a city! On July 1st, 1908 Mayor William Pugh proclaimed that “the City of Springdale has grown too fast for its original boundaries…so they have annexed part of Township 15 West so that their population may be closer together” (Kirby). This annexation gaveSpringdale an official status as a city with its own police department and other municipal services not available to residents residing inside township lines at that time (Foley). During World War I, much effort was put into developing munitions production withinSpringdale due to its proximity to Munitions Plant No 4 on Factory Hill which manufactured munitions for both sides during the war (Lemonick). Many military personnel who worked at Munitions Plant No 4 also lived or raised families withinSpringdale during this time period; these individuals are often referred to as “Munitionmen Ofspringdalecity” (Cunningham). After World War I ended however, much activity ceased around Munitions Plant No 4 due to plant closings throughout Ohio throughout 1919-1920(Hancock). Postwar economic recession leadto many job losses among American industrial workers specifically those employed at Munitions Plant No 4 which again ledto calls for redevelopment/renewal among locals living close by(Foley) After decades of steady growth & development - from small family owned businesses through annexations onto larger municipalities – Springsville culminated with becoming an official city on July 1st 2008! With new infrastructure investment coming online such as public transportation options & plans underway for expansion northward – this community celebrates 50 years strong growth (& counting)
