Springdale is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. The city of Springdale is the only municipality in Butler County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Springdale were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1797. The present-day town was platted in 1802 by James Brown, an American Revolutionary War officer and landowner. In 1806, John Romey purchased from Brown a tract of . He named it Romey Township after his brother-in-law Robert Romey (1762–1837). In 1830, Ohio General Anthony Wayne moved his main army headquarters from Chillicothe to Springdale; he called it "theiera". In 1836, Cincinnati publisher Elijah Hicks bought 300 acres (120 ha) of land on the east side of Dayton river for $1 million dollars. He built a large brick house there which still stands today as the springdale hotel/motel (). In 1840, when Dayton became a city Limits Act independent village established by its trustees—six men among them—Springdale had no voting rights but its citizens enjoyed extraterritoriality as long as they kept their place so called within limits set by Cleveland Hennepin Co., making it one of ten villages created in that effort out of territory formed by several small townships west and south of Dayton: Scioto Township westward to Lebanon Heights; Ottawa Township eastward to Xenia; Clinton Township northward to Uniontown; Whitehall Township eastward to Orchard Heights; and Middletown Township northwestward to Westwood Heights. It seems likely that some early settlers thought annexation into larger cities would make their lives more comfortable since they were already living outside municipal boundaries but this did not happen until after Independence when smaller municipalities could no longer hope for state support or subsidy beyond what was given through appropriations from the state government on an annual basis varying with population growth rates then prevailing throughout most western states including Ohio including much greater assistance than was ever given afterwards especially following Civil war times when all resources were diverted away from these struggling smaller communities towards large metropolitan areas both on the eastern seaboard and inland where jobs were available rather than being sent back home where people were hungry and often needed help escaping bad conditions caused by conflict or drought etc.. Springdale is a small town in Wayne County, Ohio, United States. The population was 957 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Springdale was founded in 1836 and named for General James H. Springdale, who served as military governor of Ohio during the 1830s and 1840s. The first settlers were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1795. They named their land New Amsterdam after their new home city in Holland. When the United States acquired Ohio from Great Britain on November 15, 1800, New Amsterdam became part of what is now Union County, Ohio. In 1836, when General James H. Springdale took office as military governor of Ohio, he decided to name his new settlement Springdale after him because “the springs hereabouts abound with water which does very refreshingly agree with our climate” (Landon). In 1837-38, Major John Fenton built a log cabin on land that still stands near present-day Springdale Village and established an agricultural community around it called Fentonville or simply Fentonville. In 1850–51 there were only six families living inSpringdale Village; by 1860 there were over 100 residents (Fulton). By 1870 nearly all of the buildings had been erected: a Presbyterian church (1870), schoolhouse (1871), storehouses (1877), post office (1879), Methodist Episcopal church (1901), Baptist church (1902) and two residences – one for Springside School Superintendent Mrs. Aiken and her daughter Alice Aiken House No 2 – known today as Mayflower Mansion House #2(Phelps). The village catered to heavy industry along Main Street with four shops catering to farmers – millsinery store owner Mrs., millwrights tailor shop owner Mr., coal mine operators agent etc.; two carriage garages; three blacksmith shops; one wagon shop; two harness stores; five carpenters; ten joiners; twelve plumbers; fifteen sawyers; eighteen shoemakers; twenty-six tailors including ladies’ hattersmiths .
