Springdale is a small town in the Ohio Valley located about 20 miles south of Cleveland. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Springdale has been inhabited by Native Americans since 1492 when it was part of the Shawnee Nation. In 1814, General David Wilkinson built a military fort here and named it Fort Delaware in honor of George Washington’s headquarters during the American Revolution. The fort was abandoned in 1834 because of Indian hostilities and the discovery of gold on nearby mines. The town began to boom after railroad construction reached Springdale in 1868. By 1870, springdale had a hotel, store, post office and 8 white families living there; only 1 black family lived there until 1915. The first school opened in 1870 as an academy for girls but closed shortly thereafter due to financial difficulties. A new school building was erected in 1902 and became known as “the White House” because it housed both public and private schools from that point on. The original Springdale high school building still stands today and is used as a library branch with some modifications (most notably adding a third floor). The current high school (now called Chaminade High School) opened in 1966 and replaced the old gymnasium which served as the town hall from 1916 to 1966 before being moved to its present location across from Chaminade Park Elementary School. In 1984, Springdale became one of two towns within radius of Cleveland that were merged into one city when that city formed from portions ofAkron, CLEVELAND COUNTY & OHIO VALLEY MUNICIPALITY AND SPRINGDALE TOWNSHIP DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY Along with Steubenville Municipal Corporation
1835-1860 - The first white settler in Springdale was James Robertson. He and his family arrived in 1835 from Virginia. 1860-1920 - A number of settlers moved to Springdale from Ohio during the 1860s and 1870s as part of the Great Migration to escape poverty and war in the United States. Many of these early residents were farmers, dairymen, or mechanics. 1910-1960 - The population of Springdale increased rapidly after World War II when new housing developments were opened up by local businesses and individuals. Today, Springdale is a thriving community with a diverse range of people who enjoy a variety of activities and cultures.
