Springdale was founded in 1796 and has been a center of gun culture in the area since before that. The town’s first store, located on Main Street, sold firearms to individuals and businesses. In 1806, the Ohio General Assembly passed an act authorizing the erection of a military fort in Springdale. The fort was completed in 1810 and served as the local military depot until it was abandoned in 1855. The first firearm clothing store opened in Springdale in 1872. It was run by G W Cook and his son-in-law John Laughlin. Cook became known for selling stylish but practical firearms clothing such as coats, hats, pants, and boots. His store closed around 1915 but is still extant as a museum inside of the town hall. In 1903, Springdale established its own police department with jurisdiction over all aspects of civilian life within the boundaries of the town limits. The department continued to operate until 1975 when it merged with neighboring townships to form the Township of Muskingum County government. Today,Springdale is home to several museums dedicated to firearms history including Cook’s Store Museum (opened in 1898), G W Cook Museum (opened in 1915), John Laughlin Museum (opened 1936), and Tony Tomasi Firearms Manufacturing Museum (opened 1990). After the war, many farmers left the area for other opportunities while others retained their homes until they gave them up in the late 1990s due to various factors including low population growth rates and heavy development pressures from neighboring municipalities which had outgrown their original boundaries. Today's residents are made up largely of agricultural workers who participate in local markets or do business online or through telemarketing services; there are also a few employed professionals among them who work for businesses located within walking distance of their homes or attend local schools (although public education has been declining since 2000).
