Springboro, Ohio is a city in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County. Springboro was founded in 1796 by General David Wilkinson and named for his home town of Springboro, Massachusetts. The first courthouse was built in 1800 and it burned down in 1802. The second courthouse was built in 1813 and it also burned down in 1814. In 1840, the Third District Court moved to Springboro from Lucasburg because of the increasing population there. In 1870, the First District Court moved to Springboro from Newark because of the growing population there. In 1907, the Fourth District Court moved to Springboro from Newark because of new court buildings being built there. In 1916-1917, World War I destroyed many homes in Medina County and as a result an effort was made to get money raised to rebuild those homes by establishing a fund called "The Patriotic Fund." That effort failed but led to plans for building a new courthouse which would be located on Main Street between First and Second Streets (now west side of High Street). On July 1, 1922-23, springborough's third mayoral election took place after Cincinnati had seceded from Ohio; two candidates were chosen: George Waugh (a Democrat) and John Cavanaugh (a Republican). Elections were held every three years with one mayor being elected for three years with no re-election allowed. A referendum passed November 3rd asking for annexation into Cincinnati so that springborough would have voting rights with thatCity On February 12th 1916 citizens of springborough voted overwhelmingly not to annex into Cincinnati making their municipality separate again

Springboro's first school was built in 1827 and its first courthouse in 1830. The town also constructed an Erie Canal in 1830-31 to transport goods from Cincinnati to Springfield and Dayton. Springboro's aluminum smelting plant began operation in 1941 and ended production in 1962; however, some of the smelters remain active today as Alcoa Manufacturing Co., Springboro Aluminum Company LLC, Alliant Energy Company LP, PPG Industries (Pittsburgh) Inc., US Steel Corporation (Aluminum) Ltd., Toledo Mining and Smelting Co., Incorporated (until 1984), Toledo Ore Producers Association LLC, WM Steel Corp.(steel). The communities of Mayfield Heights and West Side were annexed into Springboro along with most of Athens Township on December 1, 1907. On November 3, 1912 Ohio State Route 224 passed through Springboro south of downtown annexation; this route has been renamed Delaware Avenue today but still travels through most parts of the community including Vine Street between Mayfield Heights/West Side Road eastward to central village before turning north again near Walmart where it rejoins Delaware Avenue just past that store's entrance onto Vine Street again before terminating at Main Street which runs east-west within town limits
