springboro is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,539 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Muskingum County after Youngstown. The city was founded in 1824 by John Butler and named for General George Washington Butler. The first shooting galleries opened in the early 1800s to accommodate gunowners who wanted to shoot ducks or other small game near their homes. In 1847, a man named John Witherspoon opened what is now known as "Witherspoon's Gallery" on Main Street in Springboro. This shooting gallery became one of the earliest amusement areas around and still exists today as "Witherspoon's Park". In 1865, Majestic rifle company owner andgunrunner Sam Houston bought land east of town on State Route 132 which he called Springboro Heights after his home state of Texas. He built a large plantation-style home there that remains extant today (now known as Houston Mansion). The Houston family used their estate to host military engagements and balls until 1919 when they sold it to local businessman Edwin Myer. In 1923, Myer donated all but four acres of the property back to Springboro Heights Development Corporation for use as an open grassy space for children between Greenfield Elementary School and Summerhill Middle School – now known as Myer Park/Houston Mansion Park! 3 years later in 1927, Edwin Myer donated another tract of land east of town (now known as Maple Lawn) back to Springboro Heights Development Corporation for use as an open grassy space for children between Greenfield Elementary School and Summerhill Middle School – now known as Myer Park/Houston Mansion Park! After World War II ended with V-E Day on May 8th 1945, many families living near army barracks decided they would like some peaceable recreation too so they formed organizations such as American Legion Post No 1 which leased land from post commander US Army Corp Sgt 5th Infantry Battalion Captain James S Hickey at 9405 Colvin Drive NW then resold it back to post commander USArmy Corp Sgt 5th Infantry Battalion Captain James S Hickey at 11000 Ruffner Road NW also leasered lots from post commander USArmy Corp Sgt 5th Infantry Battalion Captain James S Hickey at 11415 Ruffner Road NW also forming groups like Camp Perry Gun Club which rented fields behind Ft Wayne Municipal Airport north side lot #819941004 & leased Fields behind Ft Wayne Municipal Airport south side lot #819941007

Springboro is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Union County. The population was 7,544 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a total population of 27 million people. Springboro is one of four cities in Hamilton County and is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Springfield Combined Statistical Area, third-largest in Ohio after Cleveland and Akron. The official name for Springboro is "The Borough" because it was incorporated as a borough on February 15, 1873. The town site that would later become Springboro was platted by George Hennepin on January 11, 1811 as part of what became Monroe Township with its current boundaries. A post office called Springboro was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it closed on July 9, 1907. George Washington Carver moved to Springfield Township from his farm near Lebanon Hill about this time to start a new life as an agriculturalist and educator under contract to President James K. Polk's Department of Agriculture; he named his farm Carverville (nowCarnegie Science Center). In 1840 Drury built his first school house; but soon after Highsmith erected another log schoolhouse nearby which served grades 1-3 until high school opened in 1865 when Carverville Academy began serving grades 4-8 (later renamed Springboro Heights School District No./Dayton Middle/Stroudsburg Elementary School) with construction starting October 22nd 1870 by contractor Ephraim Read & Son who also built Cooks Chapel AME Zion Church which stands today across Main Street from City Hall building just east of South Park Square across from First Presbyterian Church). When township trustees organized into village form April 12th 1868 they changed the name to "Springborough", following advice given by Trustees John Sibley (mayor) & Samuel Wigglesworth who recommended that name because: "the beautiful spring runneth out continually through every part thereof". On December 3rd 1868 when village trustees adopted a new charter changing their name back to "Springbourne" they did so pursuant to recommendation by Trustee David Ghent whose family had been associated with Springborough for many generations before that date: "…we think it rather appropriate for an old German town like ours [which] sprang up suddenly amid all this growth around us."
