Springboro, Ohio is a city in northern Ohio, United States. The population was 14,878 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in the Cincinnati–Middletown–Springfield metropolitan area and one of five cities in Greater Dayton. Springboro's rich history begins with its founding by three brothers in 1796 as a small farming village on the banks of the Scioto River. The town grew quickly because of its location near water supplies and its proximity to manufacturing plants and transportation hubs. In 1868, Springboro became an incorporated municipality when it annexed nearby Navarre Heights. In 1944, General Electric opened its new headquarters for company employees at One Energy Center on West Main Street in Springboro. That same year, Mercury Radio Company relocated from downtown Cleveland to a new building on Elmwood Avenue next to GE’s original factory buildings and operations began there permanently. In 1957, FirstEnergy Corporation moved into their current headquarters on North Fourth Street which served as their corporate Headquarters until 1992 when they merged with GEICO Corporation to form American Electric Power (AEP). In that year AEP began construction on their first large-scale energy storage facility – the $120 million Medina Plant – which would become one of America’s largest coal-fired power plants ever built when it was completed in 2004.
