Springboro is a town in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,715 at the 2010 census. Springboro was founded in 1824 and incorporated as a village in 1829. It became a town in 1859. The first settler in Springboro was James Caird who arrived on July 5, 1824, and built the first home there. The land that now makes up Springboro was Purchased from the Indians by John Denton on March 20, 1797. A post office called Springboro was established in 1826, and remained open until 1901. In 1830, Adam Hogan settled near present day Springboro and built his home there. In 1831-32 Rev John Shepherd opened a school here for grades one through twelve which continued until 1840 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1860, shopkeeper Solomon Pomeroy moved his business from Cincinnati to start a store here with cashmere items only which he operated until 1865 when he sold his store to Benjamin Knowles for $4 per week plus interest! The Knowles family ran the store until 1886 when it went out of business again! In 1900-1901 David Fournier conducted an experimental experiment with dynamite at what is now known as "The Plantation" Site northeast of town where he created an artificial hill that produced some of the earliest measurable results with explosives! For many years this site served as an official testing ground for explosives! In 1902 Dr George Waddell came to Springboro from Mansfield Township and began practicing medicine here before moving to Dayton in 1906. He later became professor at Cleveland State University where he remains today! After World War I ended vaudeville performers Thomas Dayan and Harry Waters started their own show at "The Cellar" located east of town from 1922-26; then resumed their show after being discharged by the military during World War II (they had been discharged because they were gay)! They are considered cultural pioneers for both groups of people who originated American popular music!!! From 1933 through 1951 Harold Lutz operated a grocery store/restaurant/bar called "Homeward Bound". After Lutz's death it continued into operation by wife Mildred under various management changes until finally closing down around 1984 due to economic troubles! When Post Office Department decided not to renew license #811 (springborough) they removed all mail service from this location effective April 1st 1975!! All mail going into or leaving town switched over to Lebanon post office which still exists today!!! The history of Springboro begins with early pioneers who arrived here in 1793. The town was founded by George Washington and his brother James in 1798. In 1814, it became a county seat and was known as "The Hill". Springboro experienced several major events during its early days including the Battle of Fallen Timbers which happened in 1813,1815 and 1816. From 1840 to 1850, the town went through a period of growth which included construction of many important buildings such as the first courthouse and jail. In 1865, it became an independent city and continued to grow until it reached its current size. Today, Springboro is one of America's most vibrant cities with strong economic opportunities that have helped make it one of the top destinations for businesses and residents alike.
The town of Springboro was founded in 1796 by the merger of two villages, West Springfield and East Springfield. In 1801, the Ohio General Assembly granted a charter to the town and it became a full-fledged city on April 15, 1802. The first mayor was James Caldwell. The City Hall building was built in 1907 and is currently used as the Springboro Municipal Building. The population of Springboro peaked at 23,000 in 1950 but has since declined due to various factors such as loss of jobs in manufacturing and other industries, suburban growth within the city limits, and increased medical expenses associated with aging populations.
