The town was founded by John Winchester in 1827 as a log cabin community located on the Scioto River. Winchester named his new settlement after General George Washington's army unit which he had fought alongside while stationed at Fort Duquesne in Pennsylvania during the War of 1812. In 1830, Springboro became one of several towns along the Cuyahoga River Valley chartered by Governor James Kapp as part of his effort to promote economic development within his region. By 1840, Springboro had become a thriving commercial center with a population of 350 residents. In 1850s-60s many eastern soldiers settled inSpringboro because they were looking for land grants following their enlistment during the American Civil War (1861-65). Many easterners brought their families with them and gradually started building homes here after leaving their units stationed elsewhere around Ohio or Indiana. The town of Springboro was founded in 1795 by the Reverend John Knox. The first post office was established in 1800. In 1814, the town became a part of Cleveland County. On October 15, 1825, the county seat was moved to Springboro and the name of the town changed to Springboro Township. On February 1, 1857, Springboro Township became independent from Cleveland County and adopted its own government. On September 24, 1912, during World War I, Springboro joined the United States Army as a training ground for soldiers from across Ohio. The army disbanded after the war and Springboro reverted back to its original self-government status on November 9th of that year.
