Springboro, Ohio is a town in central Ohio, United States. The population was 7,432 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Summit County metropolitan area. Springboro is located on the southern edge of the University of Akron campus and is bordered by Summit County to the north and east, Ashtabula County to the south, and Sandusky County to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Springboro was Levi Coffin in 1798. He built a log cabin on his farmstead near present-day Main Street. In 1810, John Mason organized a township committee and platted what became Springboro Township on December 6th, 1811. The name "Springboro" originated from an event that occurred there on January 12th of that year when Gideon Welles purchased 500 acres (2 km²) of land from James White for $320 cash and 10 outstanding negroes who had been indentured to him for three years (later reduced to one year). In 1827, Josiah Beech began farming his 160 acre (50 ha) tract east side of Main Street between High School Road and State Route 322 which still forms part of Springboro today. On December 15th following Nathan Bedford Forrest's raid on nearby Uniontown in 1864 while Confederate forces were retreating after their successful repulse at Gettysburg he ordered General Robert E Lee's cavalry brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Buford through town searching for any Unionists or civilians who might have survived Forrest's raid - many people did not survive as they were either taken prisoner or killed outright including several hundred residents of Springboro who had gathered around Beech's home for protection).
