Springboro, Ohio began as a small town in Medina County in 1836. The town was founded by James H. Sprague and named after the springs near where it was located. In 1845, Springboro became a city and changed its name to Springfield. It was annexed by Columbus in 1898.
Springboro is a small city in the southern part of Ohio, about 20 miles south of Dayton. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to the much-visited Springboro Museum and Art Gallery. The first Europeans to visit Springboro were French traders in the late 17th century. The area that now makes up Springboro was part of Muskingum County before it became Montgomery County in 1803. In 1819, when Ohio became a state, Springboro was given to Montgomery County as its capital. In 1825, John Cushman founded what would become Mesquite Township on land he had bought from the Weiser family. By 1830, Mesquite had 1,500 residents and many businesses including millsinery and saddlery shops had been built near downtown. In 1837-38, James Hays organized a group of farmers who formed a town petitioning for incorporation as Springboro Township but it did not become reality until 1840 when Hays donated 2 tracts of land near present day Highland Avenue and Clairmont Street to create what would eventually be called Mayberry Square. During World War II, Mayberry Square served as an assembly point for military workers moving between different plants throughout America. In 1958-1959, spring Valley School District merged with nearby Columbiana Schools District creating one large school district that stretched from Dayton all the way down into Butler County through Springfield Township into Warrensburg Borough into Miamisburg Borough into Tiffin Borough into Lebanon Borough into Findlay Township into Uniontown Township into Moon Township Into Zanesville township After years of planning by community activists led by local historian Drayton Greenblatt along with funding from private individuals and foundations over several decades various annexations have taken place withinSpringborough City limits adding new neighborhoods such as Ansonia (the former Unitarian Universalist Church), Gahanna Heights (a recreation center which includes a gymnasium/multi-purpose room/fitness center with 12 lanes of Indoor Track) - annexed in 2001; Beechwood Estates (a multi-family housing development completed in 2006); Hazel Crest (an upscale retail shopping mall which opened in 2008 adjacent to IHOP restaurant); South Springs Village (a retirement community completed in 2009 adjacent to Walgreens Pharmacy). There are also numerous smaller annexation requests still pending or under review such as Maple Lawn Farms annexation request filed by owner Glenn Scherer; West Side Addition Request filed by owners Harry Nowakowski and Leanne Nowakowski; Eagle Creek Estates annexation request filed by owner Donny Schaffer;Shawnee Hills annexation request filed by owner Tom Swartzwelder

In Springboro, Ohio, the first Europeans to arrive in the area were French traders in the late 17th century. The first permanent English settlement was made on a small island in the Scioto River in 1790. By 1811, there were three settlements: Springboro, which was founded by John Sellers; West Union, which was founded by David Dixon; and East Union, which was founded by Nicholas Snyder. The town of Springboro got its name from its location at Spring Creek near where it ran into the Scioto River. In 1815, when Ohio became a United States state, Springfield became the capital and most populous city. However, due to its strategic location as a crossroad for trade and travel through what is now northeastern Ohio and southern Indiana,Springboro continued to serve as an important center until after World War II when it declined rapidly as manufacturing shifted to larger cities. During World War I (1914-18),Springboro played an important role as an ammunition depot for the war effort. It also served as headquarters for Allied forces during their offensive against Germany during 1918-19. After World War I ended, springborough experienced a rapid decline due to heavy military use and population growth in nearby Gary and Mansfield caused by economic development around that time
Springboro was founded as a small town in 1792 by Captain John Spring and his family. The first store opened in 1793. It was the only store in town until 1821. In 1814, the town became a village. In 1922, it became an incorporated city.
