Springboro is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Springboro is located on the southern edge of the Dayton metropolitan area and is east of Grand Rapids. The first European to visit what is now Springboro was Captain John Smith in 1634 when he and two other men explored the region for trade purposes. He named it "Springsborough." The town was formally founded in 1811 by Colonel George Washington Stephenson as a trading post on the route between Fort Wayne and Canandaigua. In 1812, Stephenson built a log cabin known as "The General's House" on present-day State Route 9 near where State Route 3 intersects with US Highway 11 today. In 1814, General William Henry Harrison set out from Forks over the Scioto River on his way to battle Tecumseh at Battle Hill near Mentor. After reaching Springboro around sunset that day, he spent the night there before continuing his journey downriver next morning. As a result of this attack, British forces lost an important supply line and were forced to retreat across Lake Erie without achieving their objective of destroying Tecumseh's armycrossing into Canada. In 1825–1826, President James Kenedy sent surveyors into central Ohio to determine whether or not land west of Cincinnati could be annexed by Cincinnati as part of a larger proposed Indian removal project known as Eager Grant Land Purchase Act (Pamphlet No., 1). Springboro was founded in 1795 by Joel Barlow and David D'Aurora. In 1814, John Ziegler purchased land east of downtown from the original owners and began developing it into what is today Springboro. The first post office was established in Springboro on December 10, 1814. In 1830, Nathan Bedford Forrest bought 1/4 mile (1 kilometer) east of town from David D'Aurora for $200 to establish a trading post called "Fawn Gap". The post office was renamed "Fortress" in 1865 when it became an arsenal for the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1907, Springboro became the first municipality in Ohio to adopt a Municipal Charter. The city is home to both the United States Naval Academy and Columbus State University.
