Springboro is located in the northwestern corner of Ohio, about 25 miles from Toledo and 50 miles from Cleveland. The city was founded in 1824 by George Stephenson, who named it after his birthplace, Springboro, Virginia. The first gun store in town was opened by A.H. Stephens in 1828. The industry of Gunsmoke began to develop in Springboro in the early 1800s when local farmers started manufacturing their own firearms for use on their farms. By 1830, there were at least 15gun stores operating throughout the area and RR #1 ran through town carrying guns and munitions. In 1836, General John Custer led a force of Indian Raiders into Ohio during the Black Hawk War and while besieging Fort Wayne they discovered a large arsenal of cannon and rifles inside the walls of Fort Wayne belonging to local farmer James McNeely. Aftermath of the war resulted in many Native American deaths including Custer’s father-in-law Captain Anthony Wayne who died trying to retake Fort Wayne from the Indians. This event helped spur development withinSpringboro as gunsmiths sprang up all over town fulfilling Custer’s order for new arms supplies. In 1840, Judge Samuel Slater opened Slater & Greenwood Arms which became one of the leading pistol dealers in America at that time selling pistols both civilian and military models along with stocks of ammunition. It was also here that Cincinnati Mayor Jonathan Dayton got his start as an armed robbery suspect before being acquitted thanks to legal assistance provided by Attorney General Manchester Hamilton By 1860, Springboro had become a busy center for trade with several businesses existing downtown such as Hennepin & Co., Girdner Brothers Store No 2 (later known as Wm Hennepin), Purdy Bros., Jno Elswick’s Saloon/Bar (later known as The Public House), Naylor Bros., Latta & Riddle Grocery Merchants Company (later known as National Cash Register) among others active alongside each other making it one of America’s most vibrant commercial districts during this time period During this same time period violence between abolitionists and proslavery men escalated into what is now called “The Battle Of Springfield” where pro-abolitionist forces under Illinois state Rep . After the war ended, Union forces retook control ofSpringboro and renamed it to their new headquarters townsite after their general commanding US forces during the war – Ulysses S. Grant – on November 15th 1865; he had been visiting Stark County when he learned about this name change from another military officer working in town during his stay there as inspector general for all Northern states east of Fort Donelson Creek - GENE WILKES Jr., later river commissioner and namesake for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton PA

The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1514. The first European settlement in what is now Medina County was made on July 4, 1797 by Major General George Ross and his regiment of Marines under Commodore John Sloat while exploring the Great Lakes region for potential western land grants. On September 28, 1803 an agreement was made with Spain to sell land at Springboro for $2 million dollars which included 2,000 acres (820 hectares) of present-day Springboro Township. On February 12, 1870 a group of 30 men from Morewood Township organized as the Amalgamated Timber and Railroad Company agreed to build a railroad from Morewood east to springboro and then north to founded Dayton. Construction began on January 10, 1871 and completed on October 25th that year by Captain Wm Hulse & Co.. On November 5th President James K. Polk announced that due to budget cuts Congress had approved $10 million for building railroads bypassing smaller towns like Dayton in favor of larger cities throughout the country including Cincinnati and Pittsburgh where construction would begin immediately without any advance notice or compensation for the communities along the route. In 1915 Springboro residents went on a boycott against local products because of World War I; however only one person was arrested during this time period. On May 16, 1919 when National Prohibition beganlingers moved into town they were met with resistance from some citizens who still wanted prohibition laws passed despite having no legal substance within their community During World War IISpringboro became known as "The dumping ground" for munitions left over from Nazi Germany because it was located near both military bases at Ft Knox and Mt Hope Lake ammunition dumps disposal sites . In 1945 US troops burned all remaining German property after conquering Europe . After war ended most of these sites were turned over to various state agencies such as OHIO Environmental Control Commission who used them until 1970 when they were closed down due to pollution concerns . Today there are few reminders that those days ever happened here in Springboro while many buildings have been abandoned or converted into apartments or other uses
