In 1813, South Euclid, Ohio was founded by Captain John McIntosh and his family. The town was named after the ancient city of Athens, Greece.Captain McIntosh arrived in his ship "Doris" in 1810 from Baltimore, Maryland and purchased 640 acres of land northwest of the village of Cincinnati. He started a gristmill and a sawmill on the riverbank. In 1812 he built a large cabin for himself and his family on what is now State Route 66. The first courthouse was built in South Euclid in 1815 by Judge John Geddes. It served as the interim courthouse until a new courthouse was erected in 1830 by Judge Augustus Biddle. In 1840, Captain James Wickersham donated land to the town for a school district. The South Euclid School District was formed and started teaching students in 1840. The first building for the school district was located on Ottawa Road between diagonal streets now known as Third Street (now Elm) and Fourth Street (now Wilson). The first black primary teacher in Ohio was Mrs. Anna White who taught at South Euclid's Black School from 1850-1851 based out of her home on Third Street which also served as an early post office until it closed around 1865 due to overcrowding at other schools across town along with lack of funds from local residents to continue serving those children or build more accessible buildings that could accommodate such an increased demand given their poverty level back then compared to today where there are many resources available to support these endeavors despite budget cuts received over time through state government austerity initiatives). A two-story frame schoolhouse burned down on December 31st, 1861 during Union military occupation while classes were being held inside; this destroyed any hope that black students might be able to attend public education within sight or sound of white parents/guardians during this time period when similar educational opportunities were available but not always welcomed or tolerated by either group (despite having been open since before Reconstruction following America's civil war). Reconstruction began following America's Confederate secession from the United States in 1861 which ended slavery within its borders including Ohio; however African American enrollment remained low throughout most of northern Ohio resulting primarily fromJim Crow laws enacted subsequent thereto which discriminated against all races regardless of social class status until later movements like civil rights protests helped bring about change culminating with passage of legislation such as Civil Rights Act Of 1964 eliminating Jim Crow laws throughout much of America ).
