South Euclid, Ohio is a small town located in the southern part of Greater Cleveland.Situated on the edge of Lake Erie, it was once one of the most important commercial and industrial areas in the area. However, over time its economy has declined and its population has decreased significantly. Today, South Euclid primarily consists of a few homes and businesses within walking distance of each other. The town began to form in 1837 when three families from Ireland settled in what is now South Euclid. The Irish name for their land was "Euclide" which means "place where two rivers meet." They named their town after General James Kieft, who had them settle on his land east of the Cuyahoga River. After years of trading with Indians and others in the region, they began to develop a infrastructure that would support themselves and their community. In 1851 they built their first schoolhouse and started to sell goods at local markets. In 1865, two brothers named John Pfleger and George Pfleger purchased land north of South Euclid from Indian chief Tecumseh.(Pfleger also founded nearby Chardon). The brothers soon developed a large agricultural industry based on growing corn, beans, potatoes, wheat and other crops along with raising livestock. This activity allowed them to build up enough wealth so that they could open a store adjacent to their farmstead-the first such business ever established in South Euclid! By 1875 they were able to provide all of their own transportation by wagon train into downtown Cleveland from their farmstead! The decline in economic activity throughout much of 20th century led to significant decreases in population as well as limited development opportunities for residents within South Euclid itself until recent decades when some revitalization efforts have brought about some new retail options as well as increased access to education through local schools districts.(See: “South Euclid” by Carolyn Ladd) Today there are still pockets (in particular near intersections I-480 & US-12) where farming remains an important aspect 0f life but overall there is little active commerce or industry taking place outside those areas that are accessible by bike or car

However, South Euclid continued to grow and by 1850 it had more than 1,000 residents. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, South Euclid developed into one of Eastern Ohio's most significant cities. The city experienced a prosperous period during this time thanks in part to its growth as an industrial center. In addition, South Euclid became known for its large number of cultural institutions, including several universities and colleges. During this time also saw significant changes take place within the cityscape; many new buildings were erected in response to growing demand for housing in Cleveland."
The first land grant in the area was to Richard M. Caldwell in 1812. The town of Euclid was platted in 1816 and the first courthouse was built that year. The city of Euclid was chartered in 1824. In 1829, a railroad line was completed through Euclid and it became an important transportation center for the region. The population of Euclid grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by 1920, it had reached over 100,000 people. During World War II, Euclid played an important role as a munitions production center due to its location at the edge of Cleveland's industrial areas. After the war, many businesses closed down and poverty increased throughout the town. However, gentrification has started to occur in recent years and new businesses have begun to open up in downtown Euclid.
