South Euclid was founded in 1814 as a post office and saw its peak population of around 10,000 in the 1920s and 1930s. However, since then it has slowly declined in population and now has a population of about 2,500. The town is located on the southern edge of I-75 near the border with Pennsylvania. Euclid's first settlers were farmers who settled near what is now South Euclid after arriving from Virginia in 1810. They named their town after John Locke Euclidean School District No. 1 had been established two years earlier in that territory by order of President James K. Polk while he was still governor of Indiana Territory). The community experienced some growth during World War II when many people worked at nearby Buckeye Arsenal munitions plants or served in military units stationed here. After the war ended however there was little real growth until the late 1960s when Interstate 75 arrived and changed everything for South Euclid residents as it bypassed them entirely! The decline to today'spopulation started long before that; prior to I-75 there were only small towns surrounding south Euclid on two main roads—Old Route 68 (now US Routes 422 and 431) east to Youngstown and west to Athens—and one other road running through downtown which connected Old Route 68 with Waterloo Road (later I-675). These days all but one Main Street street are either ramps leading off I-75 or Interstate 270/I-275/US 612 (the lone exception being Erie Boulevard which runs parallel to Main Street). Additionally much housing stock has been demolished throughout most of South Euclid since development stopped following various zoning changes made by local officials back when these neighborhoods were more vibrant than they are now due largely to new highway improvements coming through!! As mentioned earlier South Euclid lost its heyday as a result of Interstate 75 moving through town completely without any opportunity for local developers or businesses to set up shop within its borders; this essentially killed off any meaningful economic activity taking place within these once thriving neighborhoods! This lack of commercial life combined with social decay have resulted in an overall decline over time for communities across Stark County resulting into an overall decrease in quality of life for residents! In recent years things have begun to change slightly thanks largely to revival efforts spearheaded by longtime resident group “South Euclids Historical Society” along with help from state government entities like Ohio Department Of Transportation (ODOT), American Legion Post 527 & Fourth Ward Republican Club etcetera !! In fact much progress has already been made such as restoration & rehabilitation work completed on several historic homes including former Presbyterian Church building which also served as high school for many years until it burned down due to code violations back in 2012 (! ); along with numerous others such as old jail, cotton gin & wagons factory all dating back before 1950!!! All told ODOT has funded nearly $2 million worth total project funds so far !! So despite current difficult times this community remains alive & kicking albeit smaller than it once was
