In 1881, a group of men from South Euclid formed the Rifle and Pistol Club to improve firearms skills. In 1902, the club purchased its first pistol. From 1903-1909, the club purchased six guns and two shotguns. In 1911, the club organized a rifle tournament that attracted participants from throughout Ohio. The club also created an event called “The Great Gun Show” in 1913 to promote gun safety among children. In 1918, South Euclid firearm society merged with nearby Defiance Lodge No. 521 F&R Club to form Defiance Rifle and Pistol Society (DRPS). DRPS continued to purchase new firearms until it disbanded in 1951.
South Euclid, Ohio is a small town located in the eastern part of Cleveland, Ohio. It was founded in 1836 by farmers who moved from Delaware County and worked on their farms until the late 1800s. After years of decline, South Euclid experienced a resurgence in the early 21st century due to its location within walking distance of downtown Cleveland and its easy access to transportation hubs such as the airport and highway system. The first inhabitants of what is now South Euclid were Native American chief Tecumseh's family. They built their homes on high ground near what is now Union Park. In 1836, when Brownsville Township was organized, some settlers decided to move into what would become South Euclid because it had more water than any other part ofCLEVELAND! They named the township after General David Hartley’s victory at Battle Creek against Napolean Bonaparte’s forces (1812). The first settler in South Euclid was John Browning. He arrived in 1837 and started up a tannery on present-day State Road 706. By 1840, he had developed his land into Farms which he sold for $2 per acre ($62 per acre today). Browning also erected a log cabin near where Water Street intersects Greenfield Avenue for use as his home until his death in 1845. Although there were several other families living in those early days, it is generally agreed that John Browning’s farm became one of the most important and influential settlements within our town limits today – thanks largely to him! His legacy will be long remembered by all who live hereabouts! Moses Asbury came next etchings show people coming from surrounding towns including Steubenville (now twenty miles away), Sandusky (now thirty miles away), Mackinac City (now forty miles away) en route to purchase goods at various stores along Willow Rd., thence down Beaver Rd., over Miami Way past Asbury Ln., under Amherst Ave., then along Amherst Ave.–Willow Rd.–Wright Dr.–Greenfield Ave.–Water St.–Union Park . . . .
