South Euclid, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Cleveland metropolitan area. It is bordered by Cleveland on the north, east and south; by Lake Erie on the west and north; and by Mentor to the east. The population was 24,869 at the 2000 census. South Euclid is known for its large Midwestern-style homes and churches along State Route 12A which runs through its center. The ZIP code for South Euclid is 44115. The earliest occupants of what would become South Euclid were Native Americans who lived near present day Union Avenue, which ran through what are now North Avenue and West Boulevard streets. In 1824 Cincinnati entrepreneur John H. Smith purchased land from the Indians in what would become South Euclid Township. On July 1, 1825 Smith donated 122 acres (49 hectares) of his own property to be used as a township or rural district within Defiance County for “the better government” of Indian residents thereabouts (). The first settler in what became South Euclid was Isaac Aikens who arrived in 1827 with his family from Rhode Island (). He built himself a log cabin on land he had bought three years earlier from Jeremiah Latimer (). Aiken went on to become one of Defiance County’s most successful farmers with over 100 acres (40 hectares) of farmland that he cultivated between 1830 and 1840 (). Another early settler was George Weems who came to live in South Euclid in 1830 after leaving Boston () (). Weems built himself a small cabin just off Elm Street () 。 By 1840 all but two of Weems’s children had relocated to Ohio (), one settling in Mentor and one moving upriver to Steubenville (). John Hickey settled here around 1850 after arriving from Connecticut (). His farmstead would remain until 1903 when it was sold to Harry Laughlin . Laughlin raised hogs, chickens, pigs, horses, cows and other animals here until he moved it across country into Steubenville where he founded Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company . After selling his company holdings back home Laughlin returned to South Euclid where he erected several small frame houses before passing away at age 85 in 1922 . In 1901 Samuel Wills moved into an unoccupied lot next door to John Hickey and began construction on what would become The Stables Motel which still stands today (). Mr Wills operated this motel until 1978 when it closed due primarily to declining business rates .) In 1951 local resident James Crain started construction oncame commercial development () that eventually replaced The Stables Motel as anchor tenant.. In 1977 Kipling Broadcasting Co., Inc., owner/operator of WCJB-TV channel 47 (now CW affiliate WBXX), located their headquarters across the street from The Stables Motel becoming one factor that led Toomey Farms Rd./State Route 12A becoming known as "South Euclids" strip mall .....Improvements made during this time included addition of numerous grocery stores - Pohl's Store being located on Elm Street - banks - First National Bank building now occupied by Gateway Drug Store - Red Lion tavern - Days Inn & Suites (site now occupied by IHOP restaurant) .... Continued decline throughout late 1990s caused many businesses closures including: JBL's music store (closed 1997), Lowe's Hardware store (. Thief River Falls Farmers Market took over those operations.), Zephyr gas station (& later KFC ), featured Anytime Fitness chain also closed .... Development plans approved during 2002 reopening failed due chieflyto high costs associated with new infrastructure required resultingin significant loss ($18 million). In 2007 developer Mercury Capital purchased majority interest in StablesMotel LLC From Kipling BroadcastingCo.,Inc.. Mercury Capital renamed it "South Euclids" Strip Mall Developers LLC.... Plans continue stalled despite efforts made since then...... As recently as 2009 there remained some hope for redevelopment when developers announced they were revamping plans but those plans have yet to come together .............Today south elm Blvd./State route 12a remains one point connecting different parts of town making it an important artery.......

It was named for General George Rogers Clark, who had led an expedition against the Shawnee in 1804. Euclid became a village in 1825. In 1837, it became an incorporated town when all of Mahoning County was organized. The name change came about because of the fact that Mahoning County had two other towns with similar names: Cleveland and Youngstown.
